THE WYCHWOOD STUDIES
000These paintings are improvisations based on the patterns and irregularities of the bark of individual trees encountered on Barnett's daily walks through Toronto's Wychwood Park, a densely wooded private residential area, originally founded as an artists' colony in the late nineteenth century. He was particularly struck by the suggested musicality of their variation—endless similarity without repetition, and also by the scars of old wounds borne by each tree; he was reminded of the lines of poet John Clare in Midsummer, lines written almost two hundred years ago, now charged with new relevance in light of the current environmental degredation.
000…the rifted trunk all notched and scarred like to a warrior's destiny
